Journalist Yagya Sharma has been honored with First Human Rights Journalism Award 2014, established by HURF Nepal on 10 December, 2014.
The award was established on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day in 2010. Sharma was the first person to receive the award.
Chief Guest Judge of Appeal Court Ramesh Chandra Pokhrel handed over the felicitation letter, where HURF's Board Member Bhakta Thami handed NRs. 10,000 to Sharma. It was written on the felicitation that Mr. Sharma has been raising voice of the voiceless; practicing human rights based journalism in the eastern Nepal even in the 10 years insurgency.
HURF president Mohan Singh Thebe said," Journalists are the first person who aware inform and aware about the human rights violation. Furthermore, Mr. Sharma has been raising voice of the voiceless for more than 2 decades in eastern Nepal through his journalism which could save life of the citizen and rights of the communities. Such work has to be respected, promoted and awarded."  
Mr. Sharma, after being awarded said, 'The award encouraged me to continue my profession and it also has evaluated my deeds, the award is not only for me but the whole journalists and the profession of journalism is awarded today."
Local political leaders and stakeholders expressed their thanks to HURF for the initiation of the award and wish for its sustainability.
