Jhapa, April 19, 2026
A workshop focused on identifying the issues and challenges of the Dalit community was held in Birtamod, bringing together local government representatives from Jhapa district. During the concluding session of this series of programs, participants expressed that the role of local government is crucial in ending caste-based discrimination, which remains a serious problem in society. Mayors, Deputy Mayors, and other officials emphasized that social justice cannot be achieved through physical infrastructure development alone. Consequently, they have developed action plans to prioritize Dalit issues in their upcoming policies and programs.
The event was organized by Human Rights Forum Nepal with support from Misereor Germany and in coordination with the District Coordination Committee (DCC), Jhapa. It was conducted under the project "Solidarity for Dignity: Collective Effort Against Discrimination through Policy Awareness at the Local Level." The program was chaired by Devendra Vishwakarma, Executive Director of Human Rights Forum Nepal, with DCC Jhapa Chief Vishwaraj Baral serving as the chief guest. While Director Vishwakarma highlighted the objectives and necessity of the workshop, Karna Bahadur Nepali facilitated the workshop.
